Because they are handmade and hand painted in Spain by some of the world's greatest porcelain artisans (or so the website tells me). This particular cat was designed by Salvador Debon. The design was retired from manufacture in 2010. (I'm no expert but I am a fabulous researcher blowing my own horn here). The backstamp is the fifth that the company introduced and was used
