This particular figure dates from the early 20th Century circa 1930. Gautier studied under Francois Rude, until making his Salon debut in 1850. Mephistopheles was first sculpted in 1853 with edits by the Duplan and Salles foundry, and was showcased at the 1855 Exposition Universelle, where a cast was purchased
